We describe ourselves in The Word of God as an ecumenical, charismatic, missionary Christian community, but what does that mean? We are Christians from many different church backgrounds who have experienced new life in Jesus Christ and the empowering of his Holy Spirit. Before this transformation in our own lives, many of us were not sure those ‘other churches’ were even Christians. Now we recognize the life of Christ in one another and so we are trying to support each other in our daily walk as disciples and to reach out to help others to come to know Christ and be filled with His Spirit.
A Little Background. The Word of God began in 1967 as an evangelistic outreach to students at the University of Michigan. Initially the group was made up of Catholics, but as the Holy Spirit began to work, people from all Christian backgrounds or no Christian background began to respond. Now Presbyterians, Lutherans, Baptists, as well as Catholics and others all join together to express the unity we share in Christ as members of The Word of God. This experience of unity flowing out of our renewed relationship with Christ continues to be a key element of our identity and our mission.
Since those early days, God has graciously worked through the community to bring hundreds of people into a vital relationship with His Son Jesus and to be filled with His Holy Spirit.
